the only thing is....

been catching up on some blogs tonight and came across a good post by The Sudanese Thinker on Obama. After reading thru the thread of comments, I got to thinking about Obama... and you know, the one thing that bothers me about the guy is this....

I've noticed that in some of his speeches, he sounds like one of those down south Baptist preachers ... almost sounds like he's standing on the pulpit.. giving his sermon right then and there...

and I can't stand this. Maybe it's his way of getting thru to some voters... I don't know. Maybe it's his way of making ppl think of Martin L. King and the speeches he used to give... I don't know. I don't know what it is really, but it bothers me. Maybe because it makes me think of liars, ppl that'll say anything to get your money, ppl that'll say anything to get you over to their way of thinking - believing. Exactly the reason I can't stand organized religion.... well, that and a few other things! ;)

anyway... has anyone else noticed this about the guy? Don't get me wrong. I like him - believe in him - but this one little BITTY thing is bothering the hell outta me!

Yeah, that's a really interesting point. Because he doesn't come from that tradition - he was born and raised in Hawaii to a middle class secular white family. I suppose religion being so dominant in US public discourse means he has to sound that way, while as a politician its also good for expressing platitudes about subjects like 'audacity', 'change' & 'hope' (before going on to appear at AIPAC's conference giving it to the Palestinians).

I agree with you. One hopes that if elected he'll be able to move on quickly from campaign rally mode to presidential mode.

But I would still rather listen to him than McCain who just sounds bored by his own words and completely lacks passion and conviction.

Like I said...he sounds like a POLITICIAN!

There are two kinds of politicians: those that lie and those that lie about lying.

Hm, I have noticed a little of this oratory style but haven't seen enough to offer an opinion. But I think psychologically this captivates an audience. Of course now that I have all day access to CNN........

We only get to see small snippets of his speeches over here, so can't really say one way or the other. But if he comes across like one of those "send me all of your money so I can carry on spreading the word" types, that is not good.

Hm.

hmmm @ post about Obama. Coincidence I guess but yup he is gaining popularity. The sad truth is, that the first thing he mentioned after his nomination was "He fully supports Israel" ... talk about change.

He appeals to me. I don't think he's like those over-the-top preachers. Good luck to him. A breath of fresh air I hope. One little mistake though is his apparent stance on Israel. He should be more tactful than that and be inclusive of other sons and daughters of Abraham!
America has a strange system though, spending so much money with a competition within the same party. Such money should be given to the poor of the world eh!

I am highly disappointed that Clinton lost the nomination to Obama. I don't really mind the way he gives speeches--I see his style as more enthusiastic than preachy. However, I just don't think he has the experience or the edge to be an effective leader yet. With Clinton, I felt that she knew the Washington game, could smell the phonies and cut through the BS and get the job done. Doesn't matter now, I suppose. I have little doubt that we will soon have our first black president. Hopefully Obama will bring a good change to this county. We desperately need it.

I don't find anything wrong in his way of presenting, to lure attention & that doesn't prove that he is liar.

No body is perfect in this world umnaief, that includes me and you. He is far better than many who contest just to follow a specific orchestrated path.

my post wasnt meant to say that i don't believe in the guy or think he's like a preacher. sometimes when i hear him talk, that's what i think of... a down south preacher or those holy roller types. many like this but it gets on my nerves.

wasn't meaning that i think he was saying that we should send him all our money. i just don't like the preachy style he's using. i didn't notice that when i first started listening to him, but after hearing a couple of speeches like that, it didn't sit well w/ me. but w/ all campaigns, there are certain ppl you are wanting to target - depending on where you are at that particular moment.

i only saw a small bit about the israel thing and i didnt like it. thought maybe this was someone's encouraging, which also bothers me. if anything, i believe he should have said something about supporting the middle east. the last thing, i think, he should have emphasized at this time in the game is his support for israel.... {sigh}
