some good news

I'm really excited... Naief and I will be heading to Memphis this summer! Been trying to work this out for a while now.. hoping fares would be low (since summer is high season for travel in these parts), so I was really beyond belief when we found a low fare a few days ago. :)

Naief has never met my older sis, her fiance, my niece and nephew (and his family), my oldest brother, and he'll get to spend a good two months with my mom. Plus, there's a big wedding planned - my older sis is getting married. :) So that'll be exciting, I'm sure.

I get to leave Bahrain during the hottest part of the year as well, I'm just tickled pink about it. The weather has been hitting 118F the last several days, and heard today that some ppl are saying it could get to 60C (have no idea what that is in F), but sounds way tooooo hot for my blood... so I'm really thankful.

Have been prepping Naief and he knows we're going on a plane and that we'll be meeting all these ppl... he's even practicing the names... :)

On a different note, looks like I could/will be going to work this Sept. My MIL is proposing that I open a play/learning center for 2-3 yr olds and I've agreed to it.. the only thing is... it's all very short notice, nothing is prepared (including the place) and I'm leaving for the summer.. so who will do it??? Get it ready and such? It's already June 1st, so I'm panicking a bit... it all has to be set up (painting, furniture), all material bought, and ready to go before I leave, and MIL is leaving around the 19th of June for holiday and she wants it finished before then. fun fun fun

This is a huge undertaking and assistants have to be hired.. and that's another issue. Finding ppl who will work for the money, that know how to speak English and who will change diapers (that's a big one there).. since most 2 yr olds aren't potty trained. It would be nice to have someone just for that.

and...

I've never done this before. That's the biggest issue for me and, really, it makes me nauseous to think about it all. I taught when I first came to Bahrain and was hugely popular w/ the little ones... and I'm good with kids... so I feel ok about that, but the thoughts of organizing it all, managing it, not losing control of the children, and being able to be creative and imaginative enough for approx 18 kids, every day... I'm worried about. I guess on a positive note, it could help to bring back my creative flow.. which would be nice. I have tons of research to do... printing, tons of administrative work... and on top of it all,

I'm going on holiday and don't want this overshadowing my time. I want quality time with my family with no outside stress weighing me down.... aaaahhhhhh...

fun, fun, fun :)

I am so hoping and praying that a pit stop in Madison is in your travel plans! How I would love to see my very best and dearest friend in the world since seventh grade! Love you!

Sounds like your going to have an excellent time in Memphis! I hope, you and little Naief reach the states safe and sound.

It's so funny. My Co-workers and I, were talking about the money you can earn, running a day care. It's definately wort ha try, if you enjoy children. Plus, Naief would have little people to play with, which may or may not, give you a moment of breathing room. ^^

I predict you will be blogging about as infrequently as I do now, or even less - because you'll be rushed off your feet with all the kids.

I wish you the BEST of luck staffing the place in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed. Judging from how things go over there, you'll need all the positive thoughts you can get.

P.S. just as importantly, I'm thrilled to hear you'll be devoting yoruself to something so worthwhile and yes, hopefully getting your creative juices flowing once again.

olivia, you're really sweet, thank you! and you are right... staffing is a nightmarish thought for me...

chief rock chef, thanks.. i hope so too!! we were at the mall today w/ the kids playing and there were tons of schools there. as i was watching the teachers, i found myself thinking about things and how it'll be and i really felt good inside about all of it. :)

nephele, thank you my dear!

valerie, thanks.. i hope so too... older sis said it's a possibility, so do indeed keep your fingers crossed. :)

miss fluff, found out we'll be laying over for 8 hrs in amsterdam.. can't imagine what to do w/ a child for 8 hrs in an airport.. but it'll all be worth it in the end! :) and i'm hoping that having naief play w/ other kids works and it will give me some breathing room. let's keep our fingers crossed! ;)

Regarding Amsterdam:
during the day you can travel from the airport to central station and walk a bit around. There is a direct train once in 20 min, departing from the platform on the "ground floor" of the airport; it takes only 15 min. The airport itself has a lot of shops and facilities.

lunatik, that's interesting to know since i'll be there for soooo long... but do they allow you to leave the airport w/out a visa???

Olivia said...

Um Naief - do Bahrainis need visas abroad? Do you travel with a US passport?

Um Naief said...

olivia, i will use naief's passport only when needed... if they ask for it in the states, i'll show it... but the big thing is.. bahrain doesn't allow for multiple passports and if they found out that naief is carrying an american passport, they'll take his bahraini passport, and hashim wont stand for that.. that's why we're getting a visa for him... so no questions are asked when we leave bahrain. if they were to take it, he'd never get it back, from what i'm told.

it's a pain in the bottom... and ridiculous that it isn't allowed. i also hope i don't get too much hassle over it when we arrive in the states. california had a big issue w/ it w/ immigration officer giving me a speech and asking tons of questions about why bahrain doesn't allow this.

the joys....

Your "Stoned" friend can advise you on nice coffee shops, although Van Gogh museum is nice, Reijk museum (not sure of the spelling but called Rayk Museum) also very interesting.

i think ppl with US passports can have Visa at the airport no? i am not sure, you need to check it up.

happy for you, it will be a good restart for your sistem, i am looking forward to my Germany trip to restart my sistem, i hope i will be able to start it over again, since i am soooo tired. Anyways, nice nice nice, good luck with all that.

I found the link:

http://statravel.visaheadquarters.com/visa_info.php?id=144&ctz=214&loc=17

It says that U.S. citizens that live in Bahrain do not need visa for NL up to 90 days. However, the situation with your son is tricky, since bahraini citizens need dutch visa.

Here is another links:

http://www.mfa.nl/en/asia/bahrain
http://www.mfa.nl/en/asia/bahrain/consular_agency

The second link is a consular section of NL in Manamah. Maybe it is a good idea to consult with them first. Would be ridiculous if they ask too much of from a small child that travels with his mom, US citizen...
