locks too long?

Seems that a few or many in the family believe that Naief's hair is too long and "isn't nice", as his little 3 1/2 yr old cousin put it, after flicking his finger thru his hair and asking me, "what's wrong w/ Naief.... his hair (flick) not nice".

I think it's adorable and don't intend to cut it any time soon.... what I don't get is why it's such a big deal to others??

Funny that my SIL doesn't realize that children say the darnest things... and repeat everything they hear!

I got angry and let that anger get the best of me and found myself flicking my fingers close to his hair (not in it - since it's so short) and telling him that his hair isn't nice and it's rude to say such things. he told me that he didn't care.... and continued with, "his hair, not nice". (let me add... i've tried to believe that this little boy is sweet... but i'm starting to believe otherwise)

when hashim came in, he told him that it's rude in arabic and then told him how others will say bad things about you when you say such things, to which he replied, "oh naief, you're so beautiful". hashim then asked if his mother had said such a thing and he said ..... yes (of course).

so manipulative at such a young age....

Naief's hair is gorgeous. Specially as it's so light, the long curls are adorable. I can't imagine why his family don't like it.

o for the love of gods!! jealous jealous jealous.. so evidently jealous :) come on, you know long blond curls are somewhat exotic for arabs, almost heretic -depending on how mean one is, or how deeply complexic :p - like blue eyes let's say, so don't take much into consideration.. ;)

Get use to it...Arabs have an unhealthy fixation with hair.

Considering the Arabs of days gone by had traditionally longer hair...(some still do)...Im not sure what the fuss is about when they see some "long" hair.

Hang tough girl...if you give in to the small things...the big things arent far behind.

I love his honey coloured hair...of course if I lived anywhere near you (I'm sure I would have been executed by now, why not? They banned my blog over there, the bastards!) I'd have forced you to get him into commercials long ago...he is growing up so beautifully...he will be a heartbreaker!

His hair is great!

And yes, you really have to be careful what you say around them at that age!

My nephew has the cutest hair ever that his parents leave long. Soon as they reach Bahrain, the comments & nagging start. Both grandmas took it upon themselves to each cut his hair separately to disastorous results. His Uncle did that too. All without the parents knowing. I'd be careful of that if I were you. Relatives here would do things that they think are best to a child even if the parents are against it.

I think it's also a generational thing. Parents our age seem more inclined to let their son's hair grow out while a generation ago both the baby's hair (boy and girl) would've been shaved.

One thing though, make sure the locks aren't obscuring his vision (I am sure you are), my nephew sometimes tips his head upwards to see better, something that really bothers me. I'm afraid it may weaken his vision over time and keep trying to convince him to tie it back (he is going on 3).

gardens of sand, hello my dear!!! how are you??? how are all the preparations going?? i agree.. i think letting it grow into the eyes isn't a good thing and have wondered about that.

i sure hope they or anyone would take it upon themselves to cut his hair. don't know how i'd handle that and am sure it would make me soooo mad!!

yeah, i've been told to shave it off - again - but we're not.

chief rock chef, i was watching a show here called The Doctors and the pediatrician on the show said he knew it was time to start bathing w/ his son when his son said something about his father's private while they were out in public! ;) made me laugh. the other day we were at the starbucks and i took naief to the toilet and when he came out, he loudly declared, "buba, i pee'd" and it embarrassed hashim a bit. i thought it was funny and told hashim to only wait....

coolred, you're right, ppl do have an unnatural obsession w/ hair. gets on my nerves... but, it's nice to see that things are changing a bit w/ some crowds w/ women cutting off their hair and young girls as well.

nephele, yeah, hubby told me that many would be jealous since i had lighter hair and most ppl are very jealous over it.... but you forget and lose sight of that when you have a child, and when it's your family... even in-laws... i still can't get over it.

olivia, thank you...i think so too!!! :)

kissy, i'm so bummed that your website has been blocked, can't even get a clear understanding/handle on it.

thank you for your compliments. :) i think he might be a heartbreaker as well... but hopefully not too much so.

I second Christopher. You have the most adorable little boy and he will grow up to be an absolute stunner. And don't let anything the extended in-law family say get to you. You're the Momma after all and they're all just going to have to deal with that x

Probably Um Naief's cousin has often been told that his own hair is "nice", and he took it too much to heart.

Um Naief is daring to be different. You know what that can mean in a stubbornly proud culture...

I'd keep it long if for no other reason than to irritate the in-laws. But, that's just who I am. LOL

Long hair is fine, until they think he's a girl! My grandson had really long hair - to his shoulders -, and on one visit to Oz, we, the grandparents, decided to cut it - with the proper Fijian ceremonies of course. His uncle and special 'uncle' hacked a bit off, then the barber tidied it up. He was about three years old at the time.
